- where are we going? what is our destination?
- how do we reach there? what drives us?
- do we set a goal and try to achieve it? or we learn through our faults along the way?
- we do realize that the journey is long and winding, right? and we have longer roads ahead of us?
- people say change is a constant thing. do we have to change ourselves? one thing for sure, we must always change for the better
- do we treat those changes as sacrificing our values? or as a way to understand and fit better with each other?
- are we doing the right thing? if it's the right thing, are we doing it the right way?
- we did wrong things, that's true. but then again, we are humans. and again, we must always try our best to do the right things. and we must help each other at that, don't you agree?

one thing i learned after being here for about 5 years, if it's bright but foggy in the mornings, afternoon would be warm. so don't bother putting thick clothes while going out to class bcoz u won't be comfortable on the way back. this applies in the late fall periods. now is already winter and the weather is now stabilizing and sometimes it rains...and ur shoes will be ruined by mud and puddles...

"...this day is for a man to sit by himself and return to Allah the Most High, ask for His forgiveness after the sins he did the previous year.
Beloved brothers, one more thing, I must note here, among other important things, that is concerning parents. Many of us are far from our parents. This does not mean we are to forget them. This does not mean we do not have to phone them, talk to them and to congratulate them (regarding the Eid). On this great day, your mothers and parents, wait a small (chance), a couple of minutes of your phone call of (Eid) greetings.
Believe, that they will not be as happy, until they hear your voices. To those whose parents are gone, today we can also remember them, do prayers for them so that Allah the Most High grants the forgiveness. Remember about them, also slaughter can be done (on their behalf), sadaqah or alms, those are also among the sunnahs of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).
On this day, just like the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), we are obliged to forgive and ask forgiveness from our friends..."
reminder, while waiting for the Eid prayers to start.
now there is this issue of yoga being considered as 'haram'/unlawful in islam. the professor who said this did so because the practice itself is deeply connected with hinduism and its beliefs. the islamic scholars a.k.a ulamas are currently discussing this thing in the National Fatwa Council. we all know that the muslims [including me] are very particular in our faith.
if you go and read about the issue in malaysia-today, you can find many people lambasting and ridiculing the National Fatwa Council for its attempt to clarify the faith issue in yoga. the common people commenting over there really gets on muslims' nerves. they claim to know much about the islamic rulings, being sarcastic about the legality of 'belly-dancing' in arab countries, proclaiming themselves as being ulamas and even to the extent of issuing a fatwa of their own.
now, these kinds of people are doing nothing to promote understanding inter-religious and inter-racial harmony in malaysia. calling others names won't help and they should know better.
coming back to the issue of faith, my martial-arts brother Nadzrin once told me this. each martial-art which originated from a particular culture is deeply entrenched in its regional religion and philosophy. all of them i.e. karate, judo, muay thai, taekwondo, kungfu and silat not excluded. this is because the art is developed through the ages and the old-masters incorporated philosphy in the martial-art to attain inner peace and ritual aspects play a vital role in spreading the arts. [bro Nadzrin, correct me on this if i'm wrong]
even silat, which is a malay art and includes rituals involving recitation of quranic verses, has to adhere to the guidelines made by JAKIM. this is to ensure the purity of islam is not tarnished. in some schools of silat, the islamic rituals is not even present and is practiced widely by non-malays and non-muslims. you can observe this in indonesian silat organisations and european silat clubs.
the question now, can the same be done to yoga, a form of exercise originated from the little continent of india?
should ulamas interfere in yoga practice? should not this issue be clarified by the hindu religious authorities? what is the limit of jurisdiction for the ulamas and hindu priests?
can yoga practice be secularized so that everyone can practice?
i have my own opinion but i want to hear other peoples opinions first. do leave your responses.

a month full with trials and tribulations.
a month of charity and good will.
a month for prayers, prayers and lots more prayers.
a month with good food from the masjid.
hehe.
my first Ramadan test. i successfully repaired my cellphone's switch but at maghrib [which means it was already 1st of Ramadan] i realized that the speaker was not working. it was not supposed to be like that because before handing it to the repairman, the only problem was the switch.
i had failed the ramadan test by giving the repairman a load of curses and swears.
today i have to go and repair the cellphone once more. also, today is the first day in my 5th year and i have to go to the dean's office to change the group. 2nd ramadan test i assume. being there in the dean's office is always a test of patience.
the Holy Prophet (pbuh) said and it means:
two joys are for those who fast. one, the joy of the meal at sunset. two, the joy when they meet their Maker
it's krakow post. a friend of mine got it from krakow. it's pronounced by locals as kra-KOV, not kra-COW. krakow is in polandremember the poll i posted not a few days ago?
i have denied the majority and jointly-decided with uShop to put 'sepurnama berGelandangan' as our travelogue title. i have used my veto to quiet your voices/polls and neglected the popular choice.
so be it!
why do we pick this title? 'sepurnama' means a period of 1 month. 'bergelandangan' means a hobo. so the title collectively means 'we are going away for a month as hobos with the sole destination - home'.
for our travelogue URL, i'll tell u later. or maybe you can search for yourself.
after doing a small research through the net, i found out that Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) includes 3 forms:
- clitorodectomy (partial and/or complete) [potong buang biji k******t]
- infibulation [jahit lubang kemaluan]
- circumcision [buang kulub]
the custom is actually not from the Islamic rule and originated from northern Africa. it is a pre-Islamic practice adopted by the arabs during the Prophet's time.
now to answer the kampung people's allegations.
1. According to the villagers, female circumcision is a must due to religious purposes. Although in Malaysia the majority of muslims are of the Syafiee tribe (there are 4 tribes in Islam: Hanafi, Hanbali, Maliki, and Syafiee), they are also muslims who are from the other tribes in Islam, that do not practice female circumcision. Only the Syafiee tribe does it and regard it as compulsory.
my answer: female circumcision is not a must but only recommended. click here. do note that i'm not an authority to rule down legal issues [find your local imam, mullah, alim or ustaz] but i'm merely explaining the issue. and RED, kindly correct, the Hanafi, Hanbali, Maliki and Syafie are not refered as 'tribes'. they are the 4 schools of Sunni Islamic jurisdiction. not 'tribes' like the Hutus, Tutsis, Zulus or Masais in Africa.
2. The villagers strongly said that if you do not undergo circumcision, be it male or female, then you are not a muslim...If you are a Syafiee and you don’t undergo the circumcision process, you are not accepted as a muslim.
my answer: no. while being circumsized is a Muslim identity [as with the Jews], newly-converts are only required to circumsize when they are comfortable to do it. see here. you got it right when you said there was no ruling about circumcision in the Holy Quran. circumcision is prescribed by the Prophet as a fitrah and a continuation of the sunnah of Ibrahim.
3. The other reason that it is done is because the villagers believe if circumcision is not done on females, the part that is supposed to be cut off (a piece of hanging skin right above the urethral opening) will grow into a big piece of hanging skin that will not allow or make it difficult for penetration during sexual intercourse, in other words, will decrease the libido of that person.
my answer: this one, i honestly don't know.
regarding the malay tradition and culture, i think you have made a good job in documenting them. malays even have a working sanitary method resulting in no post-op infection. maybe you can research on that also :) hope you are satisfied.
